National Landscape Winterswijk

Space, peace and quiet can be found throughout in the typical landscape of Eastern Holland with its small scale estates and wide variety of farm lands, pastures, moors en wood lands.

Special feature is the big open quarry near Ratum, which offers window to the geological past. Other historic elements of interest are the many farms, water mills, monasteries, chapels and a single relic from the era of industrialization: a former textile factory in Winterswijk. The medieval town of Bredevoort hints towards the 80-year war, Holland was involved in during the 16th and 17th century. This remote, hidden part of Holland, just of the German border, seems to have escaped from rapid development.

The National Landscape Winterswijk is well worth a visit.
